A document that is within scope of a depository program but was not distributed through the depository system.

Glomar response

Refers to the CIA ship Glomar Explorer, which was sent on an expedition to recover a Soviet nuclear submarine in 1974. When journalists asked about the expedition, they received response that the CIA could “neither confirm nor deny” its existence. This phrase is now known as the “Glomar response.”

grey literature

Preprints, conference proceedings, working papers, and other unpublished material with limited distribution.

habeas corpus

Habeas corpus, Latin for "you have the body" refers to the right of a prisoner to demand that a court determine whether the prisoner is lawfully detained.

Land patents are the legal documents that transferred land ownership from the U.S. Government to individuals.

mimeography

A reproduction technology that employs a stencil to transfer ink onto a page.

monograph

A detailed written study of a particular subject, usually on a scientific or technical topic.

mulatto

A term for a person of mixed white and black ancestry.

Public Land States

Public Land States are those that were formed from public lands. Western public land states: Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Idaho, Kansas, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming. Eastern public land states: Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin.

A type of compressed file that can be used in a geographical information system.

vernacular

The everyday language used by the natives of a country or region.

vital statistics

Statistics on births, deaths, marriages, and divorces.

web crawling

Web crawling is the process of using a software application to systematically browse specified web content for the purpose of indexing the content.
