This book would not have been possible without the guiding voice and technical prowess of Billy Meinke, Open Educational Resources (OER) Technologist at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.

My mentor, Mabel K. Suzuki, thrust me into teaching by announcing that it was my turn to be the instructor for the government documents course in the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Library and Information Science Program. She was my instructor when I took the class, and I hope that this text properly reflects the framework I inherited from her.

The late Virginia H. Richardson helped to ignite my love of government information when I worked under her as an intern in the Government Documents Collection at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa Library. Her in-depth knowledge of United Nations documents and skill as a cataloger inspired me to be a lifelong learner of the secrets of government information.

I am grateful to the students who have taken the government documents course from me and provided valuable feedback about the course material. I have learned a great deal from them.

Finally, thanks to my husband, Steve Pickering, whose unfailing support of my academic endeavors has carried me through highs and lows.
